My Sushi is a new restaurant in Givat Shaul that offers a large variety of sushi and Asian food and it under the excellent kosher mehadrin supervision of Rabbi Machpud.

My wife and I were on our way to a nearby restaurant to celebrate Rosh Chodesh. As we approached our destination, we noticed the sign of My Sushi, and since we’re really fond of sushi and Asian food, this peeked our interest. When we saw it was mehadrin, we decided to give it a go.

Ambience at My Sushi

My Sushi’s seating and decor are simple but pleasant. In addition to their indoor seating, they recently added the option to sit outdoors. Inside, the seating is on upholstered chairs and sofas, and outdoor seating – cafe style – with small round tables and chairs (there weren’t any shade umbrellas outside yet, but they’re probably coming).

My Sushi was hopping. The waiters were rushing back and forth to the kitchen and we saw lots of takeaway orders being called in as well. The staff in the kitchen who were preparing the cooked Asian food were extremely busy, I could see them through the window, so were the staff behind the counter who were preparing the sushi.

The Food

The variety of sushi and Asian food on the menu is quite large. As has become the sushi standard around the world, here too you can order the sushi inside-out (rice outside and Nori inside) or outside-in (Nori on the outside), fish outside and the rest inside etc etc. Anyone ever hear of an inside-out hamburger?! Me neither.

We ordered two servings of maki sushi, one with salmon and the other with red tuna. The presentation was simple: cut sushi rolls lined up, a small ball of wasabi and some ginger all positioned on an elongated white dish. The sushi was delicious. The rice was nicely seasoned and the fish was soft.

We also ordered sushi sandwiches with salmon and avocado, and despite my fanaticism for standard, old fashioned sushi, I was very impressed by the look and taste of the dish. The sandwiches were triangular shaped with the rice serving as the “bread,” decorated with white sesame seeds and nigella. and the fish, the avocado and nori were the filling. I highly recommend this dish.

The rainbow roll was also very tasty and very worthwhile ordering. The roll is wrapped with a thin strip of tender salmon surrounding the round-shaped sushi and it too was garnished with sesame seeds and nigella.

Since we wanted to test out something besides sushi we also ordered a chicken noodle dish. It was served in an attractive black bowl and decorated with chopped scallions. The green onions together with the orange carrots, beige noodles and dark mushrooms created a colorful and inviting dish. The seasoning was very good, and the chicken was tender and tasty.

Service

The service at My Sushi was courteous and quick. Our waiter was a young man who had made aliyah from France judging by his accent. He really tried hard to please us. The dishes arrived shortly after we ordered despite the large number of orders that kept flowing in. The waiters, the kitchen staff and the owner worked hard to deliver the food punctually.

The Burgers Bar franchise has thirteen branches in Jerusalem alone and many other cities as well.

Three of the branches, including this one, are mehadrin under badatz supervision (Machpud or Rubin) and there’s one mehadrin branch (Jerusalem Rabbinate) in the Jerusalem central bus station.

Ambiance

Most fast food joints don’t have much ambiance per se, but there are variations in the dining area that can make a significant difference for your experience.

This Burgers Bar in Givat Shaul offers both indoor and outdoor seating. The indoor area is plenty bright because the large windows at the front augment the restaurant’s own lighting. The tables and chairs aren’t fancy, but they’re in good shape and kept very clean.

Indoor seating

Indoor seating

I almost always prefer sitting outside to dine so I can appreciate the sunshine, the fresh air and take in the sights or people watch. Most of the seating outside has an awning so don’t have to bake under direct sunlight.

Outdoor seating

Outdoor seating

Unfortunately we had several people who took turns smoking around us so instead of enjoying the fresh air, all we could do was to pray that the wind direction might change.

Cuisine

Burgers Bar offers several different types of meat: beef, spicy beef, lamb, mixed beef & lamb, their classic burger and entrecote. After you choose your meat you decide which veggies want on your hamburger: lettuce, tomato, dilled pickles, red onion, sauteed onions and jalapeno peppers. All of the vegetables looked of high quality and very fresh.

Hamburgers in the making

Hamburgers in the making

If you’re willing to part with some more of your shekels you can have them add smoked turkey breast (10 NIS), a hard boiled egg (8 NIS), portobello mushrooms (9 NIS), avocado (9 NIS) and garlic confit (5 NIS). Although I can totally understand charging extra for smoked turkey, charging 9 shekels for a couple of slices of avocado or 8 shekels for a hard boiled egg?! By the way, who would eat a hamburger with a hard boiled egg?

Hamburgers can be ordered with a regular hamburger roll or in a Ciabatta which is an elongated Italian bread made with white flour and yeast.

You can choose from a very wide variety of sauces to be added to your hamburger – different strokes for different folks. For the boring, square, nostalgic types they have ketchup, mustard, mayonnaise, thousand island etc, but if you’re one of the bold, macho or Mediterranean types you can order more avant garde sauces like Chimichurri, tahini, vinaigrette, pesto, regular spicy sauce and flaming hot spicy sauce (watch out!).  I went for the nerdy, old fashioned ketchup sauce.

Although the meat in my entrecote burger seemed to be pretty tasty, it was a bit outsized by the hamburger roll and so I tasted a lot of roll and not enough burger.

My friend ordered the chicken breast salad which is a bed of lettuce mixed with the vegetables of your choice (tomatoes, cucs, sunflower sprouts, red cabbage, grated carrots), covered with strips of grilled chicken breast and topped with the sauce of your choice. My friend enjoyed his meal very much and it looked really inviting.

Some of the other offerings include sandwiches/wraps (chicken breast, crispy schnitzel), grilled chicken wings with various sauces, and crispy schnitzel nuggets.

If you’re a vegetarian, you can order either the health salad (37 NIS) or the portobello mushroom sandwich/wrap.

They have several smaller, specially priced meals for kids: hamburgers, chicken nuggets and hotdogs (all priced 19 NIS, 39 NIS with fries & a drink).

Service

The service at Burgers Bar was very good. The staff taking our orders were extremely friendly, patient and motivated. There is plenty of staff which allows them to service all the orders without being stressed out.

The tables and dining area are constantly being cleaned and so the standards of cleanliness are quite high.

To sum it all up, this is not a restaurant whose food will blow you away, but the food is good and the service is above average and so if you’re looking for mehadrin fast food, Burgers Bar is a good choice.
