During the day Rodriguez Express serves a selection of meats served either in a pita, a baguette or on a plate with extras. Some of the meats include asado, lamb, kebab and shawarma to name a few. There are three distinct dining areas in Ricotta. The main dining area which is adjacent to the bar and the kitchen, a side room with several tables and an add-on area which has more simple tables and is less classy. We chose the main dining area and were not disappointed.

The quality wooden tables and padded chairs together with the carpeting, attractive lighting and wall art all create an enjoyable dining atmosphere.

I started off by ordering the house soup which is a creamy mushroom soup served in a warm, crispy bread bowl. The presentation was attractive, a large, round loaf of bread serving as the bowl with the top of the bread cut but still attached. Creamy mushroom soup overflowed onto the side of the bread bowl. The bread was quite tasty and the soup was hot and creamy – just the way it should be.

It was a very generous portion, particularly the bread, that it could have served as a main dish, but since I had a main course coming, I didn’t finish the bread.

All Ricotta’s soups are served with mini rolls and various tasty dips.

Being a lover of lasagne, I ordered the Four Cheese Lasagne. Although it did not have a tomato based sauce, which I particularly love, it was still quite delicious. It had tons of cheese, was seasoned nicely and came out hot.

We also ordered the Hot Salmon Salad which I would describe less as a salad and more like a salmon, sweet potato and mushroom stew on a bed of lettuce. It was good, but not “a wowzer.”

We saw many other dishes being served and it was clear that a lot of attention is given to the artistic presentation of the dishes.

The service at Ricotta was very good. The various dishes arrived promptly and with a smile. As the restaurant began to fill up, all of the staff were busy. There were no personnel idly standing around. They were either taking orders, delivering food to tables or resetting tables. That’s a healthy sign that a restaurant’s staff is hard working and busy.

To sum it all up, I would definitely recommend Ricotta as a very good Italian restaurant for a nice out as a couple or to celebrate with the family.

Sushi platter for special occasions

The menu is packed with a myriad of sushi options ranging from the standard nigiri sushi (fresh raw fish on rice), hosomaki (rice & fish rolled in seaweed) and uramaki (inside-out rolls with seaweed inside and rice outside) but also offers all sorts of less purist types of rolls and fillings and sauces. Just to name a few:

• Spicy tuna uramaki in chile-mayonaise sauce with cucumber and avocado covered with sesame and tempura chips (36 NIS)
• Warm tempura sandwich with salmon, salmon skin, sweet potato and avocado coated with a crispy panko-tempura crust (44 NIS)
• Brown rice rolls with your choice of fish and fillings (38 NIS)

Sushi Rechavia offers SO many other Asian dishes in addition to sushi though. Check out the Asian chicken strips which are coated in panko and sesame and served with sweet chile sauce (36 NIS). This is listed under “Starters” It certainly is a good start, and for some, it’s a big enough portion to be called a finisher. Take a look below.

You can choose from a list of tasty deep fried hot tempura rolls like the Veggie Tempura with tamago, kanpyo (dried shavings of calabash, a type of gourd), sweet potato and asparagus with tempura coating and a touch of teriyaki. It’s also worthwhile trying the salmon or tuna tempura, but if you want something really different there’s the Tiger-eye hot tempura roll which is filled with salmon, sea bass, avocado, sweet potato, tamago, asparagus and seaweed with a touch of sweet chile sauce. If that’s not a Asian culinary adventure, then what is?

Sushi Rechavia added several icons to their menu to bring your attention to certain dishes to help you decide what is and what isn’t for you. For instance, a ribbon medallion appears next to the dishes recommended by the house. A hot pepper icon signifies, “beware, this is a bit spicy” whereas an icon which looks like a carrot (well kind of) brings your attention to dishes that are vegetarian.

I started my meal with some sake – served at room temperature. You can order it warm, in Japanese tradition, but I just can’t get used to drinking warm wine. The sake was delicious and acted as a booster rocket getting all my systems ready for lift off when the sushi arrived.

The sushi was excellent. The fish was definitely fresh and everything came together the way it should. We ordered several types of standard hosomaki with red tuna and salmon and then we tried the Sake Yuzo Roll made with red tuna, asparagus, cucumber and shitake mushrooms with pickled salmon topped with teriyaki and yuzo cream. It was quite a interesting taste experience, especially since it’s my first time tasting yuzo.  The presentation was impressive (see below).

The seating at Sushi Rechavia is very pleasant. You can choose to sit either at your own table or at a quaint sushi bar.

The service was quite prompt and very friendly.

The restaurant offers take away and they have a delivery service, but presently the service is available only to certain neighborhoods. There is good news though. The delivery service is expected to expand in the near future, according to Yoni, the restaurant’s manager, to many more neighborhoods.

If you’re looking for superb sushi at really reasonable prices, I highly recommend Sushi Rechavia in Har Hotzvim.
