BBQ Meat & Grill’s Entrance on Hamekubalim St. in the Old City

Ambiance

During the day, BBQ Meat & Grill has hours during which the place is swamped. It is located in a very central location and when there are groups of tourists (when aren’t there?), high school students or soldiers that decide to eat there, a swarm of people pile up in front of the counter to order. Never fear though, the staff at the restaurant prepare the orders super quickly and whip through the line before you know it. Most people order and eat outside or on their way and so usually there are places to sit if you wish.

As can be expected from a shawarma restaurant, the ambiance is not the strong point here, but the dining area is kept quite clean considering the large number of people dining there and there are some posters on the walls so it’s not totally drab.

Cuisine

The shawarma at BBQ Meat & Grill is delicious and whether you order it in a pita or a laffa they give you a generous amount of meat.. It is prepared using grilled turkey meat and if you want they will saute it with onions. You can choose from many salads to add to your shawarma: hummus, schug (spicy sauce), sauteed eggplant, red or white cabbage, dill pickles, white or red onions and for those daring souls they have a very good jalapeno hot pepper salad.

Two other great options are the grilled steak (72 NIS) and the fried, breaded chicken breast aka schnitzel (62 NIS) which are served on a plate together with fries and salad and come with a soft drink.

The hamburger (38 NIS), hot dog (23 NIS) and chicken wings (36 NIS) are all tasty and very reasonably priced.

They also offer a selection of salads which have a bed of lettuce, tomato and other veggies with your choice of meat and sauces on top – shawarma salad, chicken salad, crispy chicken (deep fried) salad.

Service

Service at BBQ Meat & Grill is excellent. I have eaten there many times and even at times when they’re swamped and they need to process the orders quickly they always try to prepare the order the way you want it and do it with a smile.

Since it’s a schlep to get into the Old City, most people won’t go out of their way to go to BBQ Meat & Grill but if you’re passing through the Old City on the way to the Kotel or are visiting for some other reason, this restaurant is an excellent choice for a quick and tasty meal.
