Market Pick & Mix (aka Alim Yerukim) in Ramat Gan is not “just” a salad bar from which you can pick and choose from a wide selection of vegetables, grains, legumes and cheeses to create your own custom salad. It also offers freshly baked fish, soups and vegan house specialties.

The salad bar has a large variety of fresh vegetables including the obvious lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, bell peppers, and carrots. It also includes other options that add a lot of flavor, color and variety like baby leaves, chick peas, kinoa, green peas, sweet corn, beets, black-eyed peas as well as avocado and various cheeses.

After building out your salad fixings, you can choose from several salad dressings including vinaigrette, tahini sauce and garlic dressings. The dressings were OK, but not great.

All of the vegetables looked very fresh and were in abundance. However, I was pretty disappointed that they had iceberg lettuce, but no romaine – my personal preference. Nevertheless, the salad I “built” was a virtual mountain of healthy, refreshing veggies with many flavors and colors. It was part of the business special called Sappa Market that came with soup (or a drink) and bread – 39 NIS.

Other business specials include the San Migel Market which includes baked fish (different each day) or the chef’s salad of the day (based on pasta, rice or couscous) with soup and a drink –  52 NIS.  On my visit, the fish du jour was a nice-sized portion of baked salmon with a mustard & herb sauce and the chef’s salad was mix of penne noodles mixed with salmon, vegetables and spices (see image below).

If you’re looking for something completely different, Market Pick and Mix also offers casseroles, cooked vegan meals such as stuffed eggplant in a coconut-soy sauce.

If you’re feeling like having a natural juice hit, Market Mix has a large selection of freshly squeezed concoctions:

  • Carrot
  • Carrot & beet
  • Apple & pomegranate
  • Orange & carrot
  • Lemon & beet juice
  • Apple

The place is quite bustling at lunch time. After ordering at the cash register at one end of the counter, you proceed along to receive the various dishes you ordered and to choose the elements you want in your salad. If you get there during “rush hour” it’s a bit of a balagan but certainly bearable.

Market Pick and Mix also offers takeaway meals. You can order your meal either on their website and have it delivered to you or you can take away your meal from the restaurant itself.

After a couple of weeks working at my new job in Ramat Gan, I decided that I had eaten enough times at the local Cofix place, and I decided the time had come to get “a real meal.” Since no one at work knew of a kosher (mehadrin) restaurant in the area, I pulled out my Iphone and did a quick Google search.

Sumesa in Ramat Gan

The Sumesa meat restaurant caught my eye.

It is located in the D Mall right near the famous Israel Diamond Exchange, a two minute walk from my office. I went with several of my friends from work, and we were definitely not disappointed.

The restaurant is really beautifully designed and has a pinch of flair. An extensive wine selection greets you as you walk in and that already puts you into the proper culinary spirit.

Sunlight shines in through the large windows at one end of the restaurant making the whole dining area very bright and pleasant.

Their menu focuses on meat dishes such as lamb kebab, chicken breast with fine herbs and entrecote steak, but they also make a savory salmon filet. All the main courses come with a first course. For the first course I ordered the marinated chicken wings and they were delicious (one of my friends got the teriyaki mushrooms and they looked really great too). Both the first and main courses are so generous that each could be a considered a meal by itself. In fact, some of the main courses could feed two people. For example, the chicken shnitzel (see below) is the largest I’ve ever seen. My friend only finished half of it and took the rest home for dinner. Each main course also comes with fries and a small salad which adds to the plotzing factor.

We found the service to be prompt and courteous and let’s face it, that’s one of main reasons to go out so you don’t have to deal with “the process” of getting your food.

The restaurant includes a well stocked bar, and you can order drinks to your table. The seats at the bar are intended only for people waiting for their fellow diners to arrive, not as a place for extended sitting.

The classy, tasteful design and the pleasant background music give Sumesa a very pleasant and relaxing ambiance, and I definitely recommend this restaurant. Just take into consideration that the meals are somewhat pricey: ranging from 70-90NIS for lamb kebab, shnitzel or baked salmon to the 150-180NIS range for entrecote steak, lamb steak or steak filet.
