Deca is an upscale fish restaurant in Tel Aviv that is kosher mehadrin under the supervision of the Tel Aviv Rabbinate. Deca is pricier than most restaurants, but if you’re looking for a more elegant experience, Deca is a nice choice.

Ambiance

Upon entering Deca, you immediately notice the classy interior design. The dining area has soft, pleasant lighting, white tablecloths, wine glasses on the table, and other attractive design elements. The resulting ambiance leads to a relaxed and pleasant dining atmosphere.

Cuisine

There are restaurants that offer a selection of fish dishes, but also offer types of food like Italian dishes and the like. Deca is not like that. At Deca, they focus exclusively on fish dishes and that’s their expertise. The dishes vary in the type of fish, the method of preparation and the aesthetic presentation of the dishes.

As can been seen in the photos below a great amount of attention is put into presentation of the dishes so that they will be attractive, colorful, and aesthetically inviting. Rich colors are achieved through the use of green leafy vegetables, slices of bright yellow lemon, and a variety of colorful cooked vegetables that accompany the fish. The variety in the way the dishes are served also adds beauty and interest: some of the dishes are served on attractive, flat trays and others arrive on plates of various shapes and colors.

Deca has two menus: the business menu and the evening menu.

Many of the appetizers are interesting and unique. For example, you can order bouillabaisse, which is a fish soup with a hint of orange flavor, pernod (an aperitif) and coriander. There are other interesting offerings including kebab buri, mushroom tortellini, and salmon tartar.

Among the main courses you’ll also find a variety of dishes such as grilled whole sea bream (served with roasted mushrooms, herbs and lemon sauce) and burnt salmon fillet (served with fresh pasta, olive oil, butter, lemon juice, anchovies and grated pecorino cheese). Additional offerings include corvina fillet on black pasta and roasted red tuna on a beet and potato gratin (see below).

Ambiance:

Before I went up to the restaurant I was very skeptical – what kind of ambiance could a restaurant located above a convenience store have? But to my pleasant surprise, when I walked inside, I was very impressed by what I saw. The restaurant is beautifully laid out with high-quality lighting, white fabric tablecloths on the tables, colorful cloth napkins and decorative hangings on the walls having to do with the sea. Another really nice touch that adds grace and beauty are three large illuminated aquariums that are sunken into the walls and filled with fish. These fish look out at the diners with a smile because they are bystanders and do not end up on the diners’ plates.

Cuisine

The menu includes a variety of grilled or fried fish served along with a slice of lemon, sauce and chips on attractive plates. Before the main dishes are served, diners start their meal with a selection of house salads.

Market Pick & Mix (aka Alim Yerukim) in Ramat Gan is not “just” a salad bar from which you can pick and choose from a wide selection of vegetables, grains, legumes and cheeses to create your own custom salad. It also offers freshly baked fish, soups and vegan house specialties.

Build your own salad

Build your own salad

The salad bar has a large variety of fresh vegetables including the obvious lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, bell peppers, and carrots. It also includes other options that add a lot of flavor, color and variety like baby leaves, chick peas, kinoa, green peas, sweet corn, beets, black-eyed peas as well as avocado and various cheeses.

After building out your salad fixings, you can choose from several salad dressings including vinaigrette, tahini sauce and garlic dressings. The dressings were OK, but not great.

All of the vegetables looked very fresh and were in abundance. However, I was pretty disappointed that they had iceberg lettuce, but no romaine – my personal preference. Nevertheless, the salad I “built” was a virtual mountain of healthy, refreshing veggies with many flavors and colors. It was part of the business special called Sappa Market that came with soup (or a drink) and bread – 39 NIS.

Other business specials include the San Migel Market which includes baked fish (different each day) or the chef’s salad of the day (based on pasta, rice or couscous) with soup and a drink –  52 NIS.  On my visit, the fish du jour was a nice-sized portion of baked salmon with a mustard & herb sauce and the chef’s salad was mix of penne noodles mixed with salmon, vegetables and spices (see image below).

If you’re looking for something completely different, Market Pick and Mix also offers casseroles, cooked vegan meals such as stuffed eggplant in a coconut-soy sauce.

If you’re feeling like having a natural juice hit, Market Mix has a large selection of freshly squeezed concoctions:

  • Carrot
  • Carrot & beet
  • Apple & pomegranate
  • Orange & carrot
  • Lemon & beet juice
  • Apple

The place is quite bustling at lunch time. After ordering at the cash register at one end of the counter, you proceed along to receive the various dishes you ordered and to choose the elements you want in your salad. If you get there during “rush hour” it’s a bit of a balagan but certainly bearable.

Market Pick and Mix also offers takeaway meals. You can order your meal either on their website and have it delivered to you or you can take away your meal from the restaurant itself.
